Notifications

Slirc can notify you about messages in your channels and DMs, even when the app is closed.

Turning them on

Open More → Settings on a phone. On desktop, open your profile from the rooms panel, then choose the Settings tab. Choose Change beside Notifications to turn them on, then allow notifications when your browser asks. Opening Settings does not request permission.

If notifications are blocked, allow them in this site's browser settings, then reopen Settings. On iPhone, add Slirc to your Home Screen and open it there. Web push needs HTTPS and a browser that supports it.

Turning them off

Choose Change beside Notifications in Settings to turn them off. Off applies to every browser subscribed to your account. Turning notifications on enables this device and restores all-message notifications for your account.

If you previously selected mentions-only in the legacy client, that preference stays in place until you use this switch.

Notifications only arrive for channels you're a member of, and you won't be notified about your own messages. Multiline messages are bundled into one notification.

The daily G'day

Each morning @welcome posts a G'day gif in #open-chat. To stop seeing it, choose Change beside G'day greeting in #open-chat in Settings. Off hides the greeting in #open-chat, leaves it out of your unread count, and stops its notification. The first greeting you see has a note under it with Turn off and Keep, shown once per account. The setting follows your account to every device. Everyone else still sees the greeting, and @welcome's other messages stay visible.

Reminders from @remind arrive in your DM with remind, never in a channel. While Slirc is open on another conversation, a reminder also shows a toast that stays until you choose Open or Dismiss. For a Remind me reminder the button is the message link, such as View in #general.

Unread counts

Channels, DMs and threads show how many new messages you haven't read. Reading one on a device clears its count on your other devices when the server keeps your read position. Otherwise each device keeps its own count.

Muting a conversation

Mute in a channel or DM menu dims its mark in navigation on this device and hides its unread count, including its threads. It does not change push notifications. Use Settings to turn push notifications off.

Mute and unmute are per device. Muting on your phone does not mute your laptop. The public channels, #open-chat and #help, start muted.
