title: Notifications crumb: Guides / Notifications description: Slirc notifications: turn them on, choose all or mentions, and control them from every device. lead: Slirc can ping you when there's something new in a channel or DM, even when the app is closed. ## Turning them on Slirc offers them in a slim banner above the conversation: choose **Turn on**, then allow notifications when the browser asks. Dismiss the banner with the **×** and the offer stays out of the way. **Profile → Notifications** (More on a phone) turns them on later. Slirc only offers the banner where web push actually works, so it never appears over plain HTTP or in a browser without it.

## Three levels: all, mentions, none **Profile → Notifications** (More → Notifications on a phone) cycles between three modes: - **All**: every new message in your channels and DMs. - **Mentions**: only messages that mention your nick. - **Off**: no notifications on any of your devices. Notifications only arrive for channels you're a member of, and you won't be pinged about your own messages. ## One choice, every device Your notification level is stored with your account, not your device. A change applies to every subscription on your account; each device picks up the saved setting when Slirc loads. Multiline messages are bundled into a single notification instead of pinging once per line. ## Muting a channel **Mute** in a channel's menu (the `⋯` beside its name) keeps that channel quiet: its mark dims in the list, and there is no unread badge, no dot on Home, and nothing in the tab title, unless a message mentions you by name. Mute and unmute are per device, so muting on your phone does not mute your laptop. The two public channels, `#open-chat` and `#help`, start muted for the same reason: they are readable without needing your attention. Unmute either one from its menu if you want every message to count. Muting is separate from the notification level above: it quiets the app's own indicators, while the notification setting decides what reaches your device as a push notification. ## Read next Curious where your data lives and who can see what?
